Could 'American Horror Story' Season 10 Be The Final Season?

'American Horror Story' has been renewed for a tenth ‘special anniversary season’ but does that mean the end of the series is in sight?
It's official - American Horror Story season 10 is coming.
It was confirmed on Friday (Aug 3) that the horror anthology series had been renewed for a tenth season, a whole month ahead of the release of the eighth season, which will premiere on FX on September 12. Season nine is already confirmed to be airing in September 2019.
The tenth series, which as been billed as a ‘special anniversary season’, will air in the fall of 2020 but will it be the last season of American Horror Story ever?
Speaking to Deadline, FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed that ‘Ryan [Murphy] asked for a 10th season of American Horror Story which we were happy to give to him,' which is great news because it sounds like Murphy has BIG plans for season 10.
He also admitted, however, that he doesn't know what the future holds for AHS beyond season ten: "I don’t know. A lot of that comes down to Ryan and whether he still feels inspired about it. I think the eighth cycle, which is currently in production, is awesome and crazy, and I think the fans will really like it. Part of what’s cool about American Horror Story is its anthology nature. So it comes down to whether Ryan and his collaborators, like (showrunner) Tim Minear, could come up with stories that they are excited about.”
While the future of American Horror Story doesn't currently appear to be in jeopardy, Ryan Murphy's new deal with Netflix might potentially have an affect on the show in the future. With five shows still in production at FX (AHS, ACS, Feud, Pose and 9-1-1) on top of all the new projects at the streaming service, surely something in Murphy's schedule will have to give?
And with the eighth season of the series literally serving us "the end of the world" on a platter, where can the season go beyond the actual apocalypse? Of course, there's still TONS of stories and narratives that Murphy can explore within the AHS universe but will most of it now have to take place in the past? Or will we be flashing forward to post-apocalyptic life on earth? Or maybe even in space?
If the show goes further than ten seasons, we might also lose some of our main-stay cast members. When Jessica Lange left the series after Freak Show (she'll finally be returning for one episode in Apocalypse), fans were sad to see her go but it didn't stop them from watching. But would the loss of Evan Peters turn viewers off?
Speaking to GQ, Evan revealed the emotional stress and impact that the show - and the characters he's had to play - has on him in the past and hinted that he doesn't want to do it anymore.
"I'm goofy, I'm silly, I like to have fun. I don't like to yell and scream. I actually hate it," he explained. "I think it's disgusting and really awful, and it's been a challenge for me. Horror Story sort of demanded that of me."
"It's been all a massive stretch for me and really difficult to do," he says of playing those characters. "It's hurting my soul and Evan as a person. There's this massive amount of rage that's been called upon from me, and the emotional stuff that's been called on me for Pose has been heartbreaking, and I'm sick. I don't feel good."
Sarah Paulson on the other hand? She's staying. “Why would you leave something that works? This idea of jumping off one thing just to be available in case something great comes by, that’s like leaving your wonderful mate because you think maybe someone more interesting is out there,” she told Ad Week.
