After weeks of speculating whether or not Nan would return as part of the 'Apocalypse/Coven' crossover, Jamie Brewer finally returned to 'AHS' and it was iconic.

Now that we’ve all recovered from American Horror Story’s incredible (and slightly controversial) return to Murder House, the season has thrown us right back into the witches vs. warlocks drama and has even gone as far as unexpectedly bringing back another one of our beloved Coven sisters.

The line up for the returning Coven members was revealed before the season started. Alongside Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson), Zoe Benson (Taissa Farmiga) and… Stevie Nicks, a number of dead witches were also announced as returning characters. Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts), Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe), Misty Day (Lily Rabe) and Myrtle Snow (Frances Conroy) were all added to the roster but there was one of Cordelia’s girls missing - Nan, played by Jamie Brewer.

Fans have been speculating as to why Brewer’s Nan wasn’t included in the line up for the season and in episode 7, titled ‘Traitor’, we finally got our answer. Yes, witches… Jamie Brewer is BACK and the reason why Nan wasn’t able to be resurrected and rejoin the Coven was actually right in front of our salads when she died in Coven.

So, what happened to Nan and why couldn’t she be brought back from hell like Misty, Madison and Queenie?

At the beginning of the episode, Cordelia pays a visit to voodoo witch Dinah Stevens (Adina Porter) in order to get in contact with our favourite gatekeeper to the underworld, Papa Legba. The Supreme wants to lure Michael, our beloved Antichrist, into the underworld and trap him there so that the end of days can be avoided but in exchange, Papa Legba asks for the souls of every girl at the Coven.

Just before Cordelia refuses his offer, Legba explains that “the last time a conspiring mambo and witch queen summoned me, they brought me the greatest offering.” Of course, Legba is talking about Marie Laveau and Fiona Goode in Coven who sacrificed Nan in place of a baby that Marie intended to kill as her sacrificial offering. Nan then appears behind Legba, much to Cordelia’s horror as she now realises what Fiona did. (Honestly, “Fucking Fiona…” has got to be one of the best lines of the season so far.)

The reason why Nan couldn’t be brought back from hell like Misty, Madison and Queenie is because she was used as part of a deal and now belongs to Papa Legba. Nan asks Cordelia to accept Legba’s offer so she can see her friends, but Cordelia refuses and Nan returns to the underworld with Legba.

Given that the brilliant Jamie Brewer’s name wasn’t once mentioned in the returning cast of the crossover season, fans were absolutely gagged at her short but sweet yet all together iconic return.

There are still four episodes left of Apocalypse and by the looks of things, plenty more death and destruction to come. If Mallory’s powers can indeed ~turn back time~ then it looks like we could be travelling back in time in order to stop Michael before it’s too late. Can we expect even more surprise guest stars from seasons gone by? Honestly, it’s a possibility.

Quick trip to Knotty Pine to see how Fiona Goode is getting on, anyone?
